Dear Stan,

As an academic advisor, you know well how difficult it can be to gain entrance to medical school or doctoral programs in the heath field. Many students show promise, but need another level of experience to demonstrate that they are ready for this career path.

Gateways to Medicine, Healthcare and Research at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University provides a rigorous academic program that prepares students for either careers in these fields or doctoral-level training. The program offers either a Master of Science in Medical Sciences, or a Certificate in Medical Science. Benefits include:

  • A small class size that ensures individualized attention.
  • A robust curriculum on par with the first year of an Ivy League medical school.
  • Career mentoring and advising.
  • Access to Brown University facilities and resources.

Classes begin in July for master's degree candidates. Encourage your advisees to learn more about this program and apply to meet the June 1 deadline.

We look forward to helping your students achieve their career goals.

Sincerely,

Gowri Anandarajah, MD, FAAFP
Gateways Program Director
Professor of Family Medicine and Medical Sciences, Clinician Educator

Dear Health Advisors,

Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is pleased to announce our new Doctor of Medicine Early Decision Program (EDP)! This small, selective early decision MD program inaugurated in 2019. While preference will be given to EDP applicants who have demonstrated a strong academic performance, equally important are other attributes such as interpersonal skills, service, medically-related experiences, humanitarianism, teaching, interest in research, and/or other meaningful life experiences. Prospective EDP candidates should review the Entering Class Profile.

More details on the program, including important dates and deadlines, can be found on our website

Due to the unique nature of this program and the abbreviated application timeline, students must be approved by the Office of Admissions to apply through the Early Decision Program. Candidates who wish to be considered for EDP should consult with the Office of Admissions prior to June 15 of the application year in which they wish to matriculate; resume/CV, undergraduate transcript, and MCAT score (official copy) must be provided for consideration and sent to med-admissions@northwestern.edu.

Sincerely,

An overflow crowd marked the beginning of the successful 2019 ADEA GoDental Recruitment Event in Chicago. Over 700 aspiring dental school students received tips on application and interview best practices, along with words of encouragement from ADEA leadership. Attendees were welcomed with remarks about the importance of dentistry as part of care for the whole human being.

This popular event offers attendees the opportunity to network with peers who are considering careers in dentistry and to learn more about applying to dental school. “Our annual event provides students interested in dentistry the opportunity to engage with admissions officers from U.S. and Canadian dental schools in one location. Attendees learn what different schools have to offer, and admissions officers share information and practical advice on how to tackle the all-important dental school interview,” remarks Elizabeth Johnson, Director of Recruitment for ADEA Application Services and co-organizer of the event.

Mind Full or Mindful? We often spend most of our day pondering the past or the future without a break to appreciate the present. We rarely allow our minds to rest for even a few minutes. However, being mindful does not mean having a completely blank mind. Mindfulness is purely being in the moment and aware of what is currently happening. This is the essence of meditation, one of the most common ways to practice mindfulness. “It (meditation) can be practiced anywhere, anytime,” says second-year dental student Gerard Scannell. Read on as he shares his advice and secrets for maintaining your focus in and out of the classroom.

5. From Maryland University of Integrative Health, a Wellness Moment:  Forest Bathing.

Birds are singing, spring is springing! Nature is constant only in its harmonious balance of Yin and Yang and the cycle of the seasons. Shinrin-yoku or “forest bathing” is a term first used by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and is really just a concise wording for “getting back to nature,” or taking some time in the wilderness. Call it what you like, shinrin-yoku gets us back to who we are intrinsically. It gives our mind a chance to reassess our needs according to evolutionary knowledge, and to conserve vital resources for when they are absolutely necessary.

6.  Marginalia I:  Evidence that students don’t take my classes too seriously, and that’s a good thing.

A student inserted the following drawing at the bottom of her Invertebrate Zoology midterm lab exam which covered the Phylum Porifera, or sponges.  I see this as evidence that she isn’t taking the class too seriously, and that’s a good thing:

7.  Marginalia II:  A “taste” of marine biology, taken by the students in Dr. Eisen’s Invertebrate Zoology course.

During the weekend of March 29-31, Dr. Eisen’s Invertebrate Zoology (BIOL335) students drove to the Gulf Coast Research Lab (http://gcrl.usm.edu/ ) to have a weekend experience in marine invertebrate zoology, since the biodiversity in marine ecosystems is a lot greater than it is in freshwater ecosystems.  The class photographer was Savannah Hottel:

The group that went.
Front row:  Savannah Hotel, Starla Phelps, Kennedy Simmons, Cristina Sanchez, Tara McElory
Back row:  Mary Anna Tucker, Nicholas Kittrell, Joshua Hardin, Dr. Stan Eisen, Sara Owen, Sinead Tierney

Leaving the GCRL on the Hermes, the oldest motorized vehicle in government service in the state of Mississippi.  It was commissioned in 1955.

Dr. Eisen shows how to use a refractometer, a device that measures salinity.
L-R:  Kennedy Simmons, Dr. Eisen, Sara Owen, Sinead Tierney, Starla Phelps

For the rest of the excursion, Starla Phelps became the official “refractometerologist”.

You’ve heard of “making a duck face”, yes?  How about a fish face?  (Featuring Sara Owen, with Tara McElroy observing)

Joshua Hardin strikes a rugged pose.

Kai, one of the crew members, explains just how bad getting punctured by a catfish spine can be.  (Yes, it can be that gross.)
L-R:  Kennedy Simmons, Tara McElroy, Sara Owen, Kennedy Simmons, Sinead Tierney, Starla Phelps, Dr. Eisen, and Joshua Hardin.

We drove 400 miles to collect these…

Life is full of difficult decisions, especially when you’re trying to bring back SOME specimens alive…

The laughing gulls know that whenever the Hermes sets out into the Mississippi Sound, lunch will be served.

We had a few dolphins follow alongside us.  Here is one inspecting our plankton net:

Dolphins being the charismatic megafauna that they are, there were plenty of people who were photographed taking pictures of the dolphins.

An unknown creature, presumptively identified as Sinead Tierney, trying to stay warm while taking a nap on board

Sinead Tierney offering a free lunch to any passing laughing gull.  It took ~45 minutes for one of them to take her up on the offer.
