AAMC Congratulates New MDs on Successful Match Day

Last week, nearly 30,000 medical students and graduates matched to residency training positions at the nation's teaching hospitals during Match Day, an important juncture on the path to becoming a practicing physician. Nearly 94 percent of U.S. MDs matched to residency positions, with close to 80 percent matching to one of their top three choices. U.S. medical schools have worked closely with students to provide advice and counsel on their choices as more students compete for a limited number of residency training positions. However, with the projected shortage of up to 90,000 physicians in the next decade, Congress must increase the number of available residency training positions so future patients will have access to the care they need.

New Legislation Would Alleviate Barriers to Physician Training Programs

The AAMC issued a statement in support of the Advancing Medical Resident Training in Community Hospitals Act of 2016, which would alleviate barriers to creating physician training programs. "While not a long-term solution to address the shortage of up to 90,000 physicians that the country will face by 2025, this legislation is an important step forward," said Darrell G. Kirch, MD, AAMC president and CEO.

Sen. Warren Calls for Increase in Medical Research Funding

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) called for greater funding for medical research through the National Institutes of Health during a recent meeting at the AAMC, while noting the value of the education, training, and research conducted at the nation's medical schools and teaching hospitals and the need for data transparency in clinical trials. "Many of our most promising young scientists are either leaving the field or they are going to other countries where someone will fund their work," said Warren. "What discoveries have we missed out on because Congress has cut research support?"

Search Begins for New LCME Co-Secretary

The AAMC is seeking a senior director of accreditation services and Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) co-secretary. The LCME accredits medical education programs leading to the MD degree in the United States and Canada and is jointly sponsored by the AAMC and the American Medical Association. The position is open until filled, and interested applicants are encouraged to apply by Apr. 1 for fullest consideration. The anticipated start date is Sept. 1, 2016.

National Academies Report Explores Metrics for Improving Population Health

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine published a summary of a recent workshop on measuring and improving population health. The workshop highlighted existing and emerging population health metrics, including areas of overlap and gaps, and included discussion of the metrics necessary for stakeholder action across multiple sectors whose engagement is needed to transform the conditions for health in communities.

Dear Health Professions Advisor:

As you review the status of your students who are interested in pursuing an M.D. degree, we encourage you to advise them that the Sackler School of Medicine-New York State/American Program of Tel Aviv University offers them that opportunity. Our program is designed solely for American and Canadian students and is taught in English. We are chartered, registered and accredited by the New York State Education Department since 1976. Approximately 2000 M.D. degrees have been awarded in that period of time.

Tel Aviv University and its Sackler School of Medicine are internationally renowned institutions, respected for the quality of their academic programs and their distinguished faculty. The school has a "rolling admissions" policy. Applications and supplemental materials for the class entering in August 2016 will be accepted until May 13, 2016. However, we suggest that students apply as soon as possible in order for qualified applicants to be interviewed.

Sackler graduates return to the U.S. and Canada for their residency training. They participate in the National Residency Matching Program and have been matched to the most distinguished residency programs.

Sackler School of Medicine offers an opportunity for the highly motivated student to further his or her aspirations for an M.D. degree. If you have any questions or wish additional information please do not hesitate to contact us. Please visit our website at http://sacklerschool.org

5.  The University of Vermont College of Medicine offers a Summer Medical School Prep Program to help students prepare for the revised MCAT, build clinical experience with formal shadowing and medical simulation center activities, and practice essential interviewing skills.

Dear Advisor,

I am writing to ask for your help matching your qualified Pre-Med advisees with an important new summer program we've created to help students prepare for the revised MCAT, build clinical experience with formal shadowing and medical simulation center activities, and practice essential interviewing skills from June 20 - July 15 (four weeks) - The UVM College of Medicine Summer Medical School Prep Program

I care deeply about helping students progress successfully through their pre-med pathway into medical school and on to the patient's bedside. I have served students in the College of Medicine as a teacher and mentor, Biochemistry Department Chair, Director of Pre-clinical Assessment of the College of Medicine Vermont Integrated Curriculum and as a member of the Admissions Committee. This program is being offered by me and a teaching team of accomplished College of Medicine faculty. However, your students will not just learn from faculty, they also will be assigned to a current Medical Student who will serve as their personal mentor and can provide them with important information on how to gain acceptance to and be successful in medical school today.

This program is for pre-med students who are getting ready to take the MCAT and apply to medical school. We expect that most participants will have completed their first three years of undergraduate pre-med coursework before starting the program this summer. Recent graduates are welcome to participate as long as they have completed the standard pre-med course requirements.

If this program sounds like a good fit for any of your students, then I encourage you to match qualified students with this opportunity and help them register immediately because seats are limited.

If you are willing to encourage them to consider this opportunity, I have also attached a student letter detailing the program that you could attach to an email from you to your students.

You can learn more and register students online at learn.uvm.edu/summermed.

I truly appreciate your support of this program and the important work you do for our future physicians.

Sincerely,

With the sequencing of the human genome and availability of high power computational methods and various high through-put technologies, biomedical sciences and medicine are undergoing a revolutionary change. The new field of systems medicine (Personalized Medicine) is the application of systems level approaches and tools to biomedical problems. A defining highlight of this program is a capstone project/practicum/internship, which allows students to work with some of the most renowned health institutions in the world, such as the NIH and the FDA. This requirement ensures that students will be able to develop prestigious vitae that can vault their education and/or career to the next level. The Systems Medicine Master's Program is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in academics, industry, research, medical school and any health-related professions.

Our M.S. program offers the following main learning objectives:

  • The curriculum has the option of being completed in either 2 or 3 semesters.
  • Students will gain the ability to recognize the broad relevance of computational thinking in everyday life, as well as its applicability within other scientific domains.
  • The curriculum will train students to understand and appreciate the basics of informatics and its applications to biological and biomedical research.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of essential facts and theories relating to Systems Medicine.

8.  The question on the HLTHPROF listserv was “How many vet hours does a student need to apply to veterinary school?”

Here’s one answer, from Dr. Bernard Fischer, D.V.M., Ph.D., Undergraduate Pre-Veterinary Advisor, Duke University, in which he indicates that, basically, it depends:

Depending on where the student plans on applying, they will need a minimum of 250 vet hours, some schools want 300 clinical vet hours, some schools 400+ vet hours from 3 different experiences (which includes research).  Most of my pre-vet students have 750-1000 hours.

Boston area – check at Tufts vet school for summer research opportunities, may need to volunteer.

Seattle area – check with local practitioners.  Washington State vet school is in Pullman Washington.

But worth checking all over.  See if you can still apply for NIH summer fellowship and try to work with some vets that are involved with NIH such as NIEHS where they have veterinary pathologists.

State veterinary labs are another good place for summer opportunities.
