Report on Medical School Faculty Salaries Now Available

The AAMC has published the annual Report on Medical School Faculty Salaries (2014–2015) based on fiscal year salary data submitted from 144 accredited U.S. medical schools as part of the 2015 AAMC Faculty Salary Survey. The report includes total compensation statistics for six faculty ranks in 92 departments/specialties, along with 33 tables that present the total compensation attributable to teaching, patient care, or research for 107,792 full-time medical school faculty, as well as other faculty salary data. Following this edition, the report will be updated quarterly.

Call for 2016 AAMC Awards Nominations

Each year during Learn Serve Lead: The AAMC Annual Meeting, the AAMC recognizes individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the academic medicine community and enhancing the health of the nation. Information on the awards program, nomination requirements, and deadlines can be found in the 2016 AAMC Awards Call for Nominations brochure or here. The deadlines for nominations are between April 4 and May 6.

New Reporter Series Highlights Innovation in Medical Education

Throughout 2016, the AAMC Reporter will feature monthly articles on innovation in medical education. The series will cover new models for training medical students and residents in everything from quality and safety to interprofessional education, community partnerships, and the learning environment. The first article in the series highlights efforts to integrate safety principles and practices into residency training.

Journal Article Examines Challenges of U.S. Physician Workforce

A recent article published in the American Journal of the Medical Sciences examines the size, distribution, and composition of the physician workforce in the United States and its future challenges. The article provides an overview of the current state of the workforce and graduate medical education (GME), a brief history of calls for GME reform since 1910, and the recent discussions about the workforce projections. Authored by AAMC Chief Public Policy Officer Atul Grover, MD, PhD; AAMC Chief Health Care Officer Janis Orlowski, MD; and former senior director of the AAMC Center for Workforce Studies Clese Erikson, MPAff, the article is available here (subscription required after March 11).

New Initiative Advances Compassionate, Collaborative Care

A new initiative from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation focuses on the intersection of compassion and collaboration to achieve the goal of person-centered care and optimal outcomes for patients, families, and providers. The program—Compassionate, Collaborative Care (Triple C)—emerged out of The Triple C Framework, which was co-developed by the Gold Foundation and the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare and in collaboration with an advisory group of health professions educators, providers, licensure and accreditation agency representatives, and patient advocates, including representatives from the AAMC. The framework describes 14 attributes that should be taught and assessed in health professional training and practiced in care delivery and team interactions.

On the Move

Paul R.G. Cunningham, MD, dean of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, will retire in Sept. 2016. Cunningham has served as dean since 2008, and has led the school in its work to increase opportunities for underrepresented minorities in medical education and improve the health status of citizens in eastern North Carolina.

Please share the following with any students you think may be interested in VMD-PhD combined degree training.

Thank you!

Rabbits help lower cholesterol. Cats may lead to a breakthrough in the AIDS epidemic. And dogs have taught doctors new heart surgery techniques. Even lobsters help scientists understand Parkinson's disease. For over 100 years, animal research has helped wipe out such diseases as smallpox and polio while increasing the human lifespan by 28 years. Whether it's fighting epilepsy, finding a cure for Alzheimer's or making progress in brain and spinal cord trauma, the link between human health and animal health is absolutely crucial.

The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine provides an outstanding environment for the training of future veterinary scientists through our combined VMD-PhD program. It's an excellent way for you to continue your education while impacting the future of medicine for humans and all species.

Who knows what today's research could do for future generations? Find out more by visiting www.PennVetPhD.org
