The campus community is invited to attend a program entitled "What You Chew Is Up To You: Nutrition For The Real World," which will be held on Tuesday, February 9, 1:00-1:50 p.m. in Sabbatini Lounge. The program, cosponsored by the departments of Health Services and Counseling, will be conducted by Leslie Schilling, owner and nutrition counselor of Schilling Nutrition Therapy. Don't miss this empowering nutrition presentation sure to make your food choices less complicated, portioning ridiculously easy, and stats to make you want to ditch dieting forever.


 

 

3.  On Thursday, February 11, the US Army Medical Department will host a tour of one of the Army's Deployable Rapid Assembly Shelters, or DRASH, on the campus of Christian Brothers University. 

On Thursday, February 11, the US Army Medical Department will host a tour of one of the Army's Deployable Rapid Assembly Shelters, or DRASH, on the campus of Christian Brothers University.  The event offers a rare glimpse inside the modern emergency Army medicine that allows life-saving procedures to be performed immediately on the battlefield.  This event would begin at 0900.  It takes about 3 to 4 hours set-up and tear-down.

 

The DRASH will allow hands-on experience and provide situational awareness of a career in Army Medicine. A subject matter expert will be present to answer questions and, if requested, can teach a class on myriad topics, to include: mass casualty response, emergency trauma, traumatic brain injury recognition, or leadership/management. Individuals will be exposed to equipment that is used for emergency trauma in an austere environment and a visual will be provided for them to see how the Army can portably accomplish its medical mission across the world.

AAMC Announces Leadership Additions

The AAMC has announced the appointment of an executive vice president, a chief operating officer, and a new public policy officer. Karen Fisher, JD, who has served as senior health counsel for the U.S. Senate Finance Committee for the past four years, will join the AAMC in May as chief public policy officer. She will succeed Atul Grover, MD, PhD, who will become the association's executive vice president on Mar. 1. In his new role, Grover will provide strategic leadership in the areas of medical education, academic affairs, health care affairs, scientific affairs, learning and leadership programming, diversity and inclusion, public policy, and communications. Also effective Mar. 1, Diana Bourke, AAMC chief information officer since 2013, will move into a new role as chief operating officer.

Report Examines Medicare's Pay-for-Performance Programs at Major Teaching Hospitals

A recent Analysis in Brief examines the impact of three Medicare hospital quality performance programs on major teaching hospitals. The results show that a portion of major teaching hospitals have consistent penalties across all three programs. Moreover, hospitals with the highest penalties have a higher percentage of low-income patients compared with the top performers. These findings raise questions about the fairness of program design and whether patient population characteristics are sufficiently adjusted for in Medicare's quality performance programs.

AAMC Named Top Innovator Among Washington Associations

For the second consecutive year, the AAMC has been recognized on the annual list of association and nonprofit innovators by the association trade publication, Bisnow Media, and the American Society of Association Executives. The Trending 40 honors Washington, D.C. associations and nonprofits that are driving technology solutions, revenue and fundraising initiatives, new events and programs, and other innovations to advance the missions of their organizations.

Webinar Focuses on Increasing the Number of Black Males in Medicine

On Feb. 4, the AAMC, in partnership with the American Medical Association and the Student National Medical Association, will host a webinar exploring solutions to increase the number of minorities underrepresented in medicine, black/African-American men in particular. The free webinar is a follow-up to Altering the Course: Black Males in Medicine, a 2015 AAMC publication that highlights the decline among black males applying to and attending medical school since 1978. In Memoriam: William Anlyan, MD

William G. Anlyan, MD, former dean at Duke University School of Medicine, died Jan. 17 at the age of 90. He began his residency at Duke in 1949, went on to lead the medical school from 1964 to 1989, and became the first chancellor of health affairs in 1983. Anlyan also served as the first chairman of the AAMC's Council of Deans and was a recipient of the Abraham Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to Medical Education.

On the Move

Arthur J. Ross III, MD, MBA, has been appointed interim dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University, succeeding David J. Bjorkman, MD, MSPH, who announced that he would step down as dean and executive director of medical affairs effective Jan. 1. Ross recently retired as dean at West Virginia University School of Medicine.

The Ohio State University has announced David P. McQuaid will become CEO of The Ohio State University Health System and chief operating officer of the Wexner Medical Center. McQuaid was previously executive vice president for clinical affairs and president and CEO of Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia.

 

5.  Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, (RowanSOM) announces an extension of its application deadline for applicants applying for fall 2016 to March 1, 2016.   

Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, (RowanSOM) is excited to announce that we have extended our application deadline for applicants applying for fall 2016.  The application deadline has been extended to March 1, 2016.  

 

We will be accepting applications from students interested in our expanded Problem Based Learning Curriculum, (PBLC).  The PBLC will include cohorts of eight (8) students each.

                         

What is Problem Based Learning (PBL)?

                                                      

1.       It is learning which results from the process of working toward the understanding and resolution of a problem.

2.       In PBL, the problems students encounter are those of actual patient cases, which present in a variety of formats.

3.       Patient problems are presented in a carefully designed electronic format and serve as stimuli for learning.

4.       Standardized patient encounters are used to simulate an actual patient problem.  They aid in the acquisition and development of clinical and interpersonal skills. 

5.       Patient problems in all formats include the element of free inquiry; students approach patient problems just as a physician does.

6.       Students apply their knowledge to patient problems and are able to either confirm or reject their hypotheses. 

7.       Self-directed learning is an important element of the program, the PBL is not an independent study curriculum.

8.       Each student works as a member of a tutorial group and the group works together in resolving patient problems; teamwork is an essential ingredient in problem-based learning.

The MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine is offering summer education
and research training to outstanding undergraduate students, who are
interested in combined DO-PhD training for a career as a
physician-scientist are offered an opportunity to conduct research and
to be exposed to the excitement of an academic medical environment.
The MSUCOM Summer Undergraduate Education and Research Program is a 10
week program that begins May 31, 2016 and will conclude August 5,
2016. Up to six awards will be given to qualified undergraduate
applicants each year. The program includes both clinical & laboratory
experiences. Students will work in a research laboratory under the
guidance of selected faculty members in the biomedical sciences,
shadow physician-scientists in a clinical setting, attend seminars
emphasizing the intersection of science and medicine, and participate
in career development workshops.  Students will work with faculty on
an individual basis and as part of a research team. Research teams will include graduate students, post docs, research  scientists, and current DO-PhD students.

•         Students will be matched based on their interests to a
research faculty mentor/laboratory at Michigan State University.  The
student will work in the laboratory 10 weeks.
•         All students will be required to make a full-time
commitment (at least 40 hours per week) to their research. Students
will be required to  make a presentation to their fellow SUPER
participants, faculty mentors, and others at the end of the program. 
Students can expect to have “hands on” experience and learn the basic
skills necessary to contribute to a research effort; a sample of the
techniques a student might learn includes: maintaining cell cultures,
electrophoresis, chromatography, immunoassays, animal surgery,
electrophysiology and neurochemical assays, and protein and nucleic
acid molecular biology.

•         Students will receive exposure to the practice of medicine
by individual physician mentors; this experience will average 2-10
weeks.
•         Students will participate in several workshops (1) how to
apply to MSUCOM medical school  and  MSU graduate programs (2)
information on how to complete their AACOMAS (American Association of
Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine application service) application  (3)
how to succeed in medical school or graduate  school.    Students will
also attend weekly research seminars.

•         A "Certificate of Merit" will be awarded to all
participants upon completion of the program.
•         Each SUPER undergraduate participant will receive $2,500
for the 10-week, full-time research experience.  Accommodations in
University Housing will be provided for any student outside of the
greater Lansing, East Lansing area. In order to participate in the
clinical portion of the program (shadowing in physicians’ clinics)
students are required to have their own vehicle for transportation off
campus.

Eligibility:  Applications are invited from undergraduate students
who are currently in their junior year, have a GPA of 3.5 or higher,
and have a minimum of one full semester of research experience.
Students who have a GPA of less than 3.5 but have extensive research
experience are also encouraged to apply. Applicants should be involved
in research and be interested in graduate and medical education in
biomedical sciences leading to a DO-PhD. Eligible students must be US
citizens or permanent residents who anticipate graduating with a
bachelor’s degree in the biological or physical sciences in the
academic year following the summer of planned participation.
Graduating seniors are not eligible.

Selection: Selection of students is based on the completed
application that asks for a description of academic interests, career
goals, and research experiences. Students must state specific
scientific interests and any particular research areas or techniques
they wish to explore in order to be matched with research faculty.
Also required are two letters of recommendation ( from faculty and/or
from an advisor) and an unofficial transcript from the student's
undergraduate institution(s). Minority students are encouraged to
apply.  Deadline for receipt of all materials in our office is March
31, 2016. Decisions will be made and students notified by April 30,
2016.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Wolf River Conservancy Partner:

Ring Container Technologies Challenge Grant a Success – Thanks to everyone for your support!

On September 26, 2015, the Ring Container Technologies Challenge Grant was announced to the public. Under the terms of the grant, the Ring Container Technologies Company would provide matching funds of up to $500,000 to support the WRC’s land conservation projects.

The first project to be funded under the grant was the “Triple Zee” property, a 215-acre property which, once protected, would create 4000 contiguous acres of protected land on both sides of the Wolf River connecting Shelby and Fayette counties. This project is very important to our overall watershed protection strategy and we expect to close on the property this month.

The response from the community and our membership has been tremendous...Thank You!

During the three months following the announcement, over 180 individuals donated to the Ring Challenge; for 22% of these donors this was a first-time financial gift to the WRC. Clearly, our mission to protect lands with significant conservation value in the Wolf River Watershed is important to the community - you have proved it with your financial support. As a reminder, we prioritize our land projects based two important factors: the protection of our clean drinking water supply, the Memphis Sand Aquifer, and protection of habitat for the native wildlife that depend on the watershed.

The recent news of the contaminated water supply in Flint, Michigan, and its associated consequences provides us with a stark reminder that we here in Memphis and the Mid-South cannot take our abundant clean drinking water for granted. We all have a shared responsibility to help protect this important natural resource.

   Thank you to the Ring Container Technologies Company and to everyone who made a contribution toward our effort to protect our watershed! Financial gifts can still be directed toward the Challenge at this link.
