IHS Scholarship Programs Accepting Applications

Deadline for New Applicants: March 28, 2015

(February 5, 2015)   The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Indian Health Service (IHS) is accepting applications for its fiscal year 2015 Indian Health Professions Preparatory, Indian Health Professions Pre-graduate, and Indian Health Professions Scholarship Programs.  Authorized by Section 103 of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, the IHS Scholarship Programs are designed to encourage American Indians and Alaska Natives to enter the health professions to assure the availability of Indian health professionals to serve Indians.  Both full-time and part-time scholarships will be awarded.  Awards will cover tuition and fees as well as other related costs.

To be eligible for the Health Professions Preparatory Scholarship, you must:

  • Be an American Indian (Federally and/or State recognized Tribal members, first and second degree descendants of Federally and/or State recognized Tribal members, Federally recognized Tribal members from Tribes terminated since 1940), or Eskimo, Aleut, and other Alaska Natives.
  • Have successfully completed high school education or high school equivalency.
  • Have been accepted for enrollment in a compensatory, pre-professional general education course or curriculum.

To be eligible for the Health Pre-graduate Scholarship, you must:

  • Be an American Indian (Federally and/or State recognized Tribal members, first and second degree descendants of Federally and/or State recognized Tribal members, Federally recognized Tribal members from Tribes terminated since 1940), or Eskimo, Aleut, and other Alaska Natives.
  • Have successfully completed high school education or high school equivalency.
  • Have been accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an accredited pre-graduate program leading to a baccalaureate degree in pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-optometry, or pre-podiatry.

To be eligible for the Indian Health Professions Scholarship, you must:

  • Be a member of a Federally recognized Indian Tribe, Eskimo, Aleut, or other Alaska Natives.
  • Be enrolled in an appropriately accredited school and be pursuing a course of study in a health profession.
  • Note: The Indian Health Professions Scholarship recipients will incur a service obligation upon acceptance of funding from this program.

For a comprehensive list of IHS-approved health profession degree programs for the 2015-2016 academic year, visit: http://www.ihs.gov/scholarship/comparison_chart.pdf.

For full-time students, funding for the Health Professions Preparatory Program is limited to two years (part-time equivalent of two years not to exceed four years for part-time students) and four years each for the Health Professions Pre-Graduate and Health Professions Programs (part-time equivalent of four years not to exceed eight years for part-time students.)  Approximately 40 awards will be made in total under the Health Professions Preparatory and Pre-graduate Scholarship Programs, and the average expected award amount to a full-time student is approximately $34,924.70.  Approximately 233 awards will be made under the Health Professions Program, and the average expected award amount to a full-time student is approximately $43,105.80.  New applicants are expected to be notified by July 2, 2015.  Please note: Due to the rising cost of education and the decreasing number of scholars who can be funded by this program, the IHS has changed the funding policy for Preparatory and Pre-graduate Scholarship awards and reallocated a greater percentage of its funding in an effort to increase the number of Health Professions Scholarships to better meet the health care needs of the IHS and its Tribal and Urban Indian health care system partners.

For further information on the IHS Scholarship Programs, including additional eligibility requirements, visit: http://www.ihs.gov/scholarship/scholarships/eligibility/.

For questions regarding the application process, contact your IHS Area Scholarship Coordinator.

For questions regarding other programmatic matters, contact Robert Pittman, Acting IHS Scholarship Branch Chief, at (301) 443-6197.

For questions regarding payment information, contact Craig Boswell, Grants Scholarship Coordinator, Division of Grants Management, Indian Health Service, at (301) 443-0243.

On February 21, 1927, Sears, Roebuck & Co. executives came to Memphis to break ground on what would become their seventh retail and distribution center. On Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 - on the 88th anniversary of that groundbreaking - we will break new ground for the Crosstown redevelopment.

As part of the groundbreaking ceremony, the Metal Museum will be pouring tiles made from melted down radiators from the original building. The tiles will then be incorporated into the renovated building. All funds raised above cost will benefit the Church Health Center.
