3.  The University of California – Berkeley School of Optometry is offering a three-day “in residence” program for individuals interested in a career in Optometry.

BerkeleyOptometry2013_flier.jpg

The Admissions and Student Affairs Office at UC Berkeley's School of Optometry is pleased to announce that we will again host our summer Opto-Camp program!  We will offer two sessions this summer, June 17-19 and July 15-17.

The goal of Berkeley Optometry's Opto-Camp is to introduce underrepresented and first generation pre-health science majors to Optometry as a potential future career track and to prepare them to be successful applicants to optometry school. The objective of Berkeley Optometry's Opto-Camp is to present a three-day "in residence" experience that will provide participants with opportunities to learn about the profession of optometry and the process of becoming an optometrist.

Please note that there is a $125 program fee for those selected to attend, however, we are also offering a limited amount of scholarships per session.

Program specifics and the application are linked here:

http://optometry.berkeley.edu/opt_txtpp/admissions/admitoptocamp.html

The application deadline is Monday, May 6, 2013.

Please share this information with anyone who you think might be interested. Thank you!

 Best wishes,

Heather Iwata
Opto-Camp Director

4.  Marginalia:  This, too, is SCIENCE!

Every year, the CBU community is invited to participate in BIOL 103’s Dinstuhl’s Chocolate Tasting Session, in which everyone gets a chance to learn how to savor the AROMA, the SOUND, and finally the FLAVOR of gourmet chocolate, and to indicate your preference.  It is quite an educational experience, because there is much to learn about the Biology of Addiction.  By the way, congratulations to Amy Ware and to Jasmine Barrett for winning the raffle prizes.

Lesson #1:  Do you know what synesthesia means?

Answer (from dictionary.com):   sensation produced in one modality when a stimulus is applied to another modality, as when the

hearing of a certain sound induces the visualization of a certain color.   The top two photos show participants experiencing the flavor of white chocolate through listening to the cracking sound as they broke a wafer.

Lesson #2:  Was there a significant difference in the number of females and males responding to the announcement of the tasting session?  In other words, there were 27 individuals who attended the event.  Assuming an equal number of females and males on campus, roughly equal numbers of females and males should have attended.  Here are the results:

According to this Chi-square goodness of fit test for 2 classes, the number of females who attended the event is significantly different than the number of males.

Lesson #3:  Was there a significant difference in the preferred flavors indicated by males and females?  All attendees were given three wafers, including white, milk and dark chocolate.  They were then asked to indicate in a survey form what their favorite flavor was.  Here are the results:
