The ultimate
measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and

6. Marginalia: Travelogue to Reelfoot Lake, March 25-26, 2011, by
the Dr. Eisen’s Limnology and Dr. Joy Layton’s
Entomology classes (photographs courtesy of Carey Bowen). |

|
During the weekend of March 25-26, 2011, Dr. Eisen’s Limnology and Dr. Joy Layton’s Entomology classes went on a field trip to Reelfoot Lake. Part of that field trip involved canoeing through the cypress swamp. The good news about this field trip is: 1) No
one drowned; 2) No
one got electrocuted as the electrical storm passed overhead; 3) No
one got bitten by snakes. (Actually, it
was too cold for the snakes to be out. Here are some pictures: Ms. Kim Crews, Interim Director of the University of Tennessee – Martin (in camo jacket) giving initial instructions of how to use a canoe and where we were going within the swamp. Notice how attentive and dry everyone is: We’re on our way! (Notice how dry everyone still is):
We’re sailing along… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJvMfQKl1nU
Or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avaSdC0QOUM&feature=relmfu
Dr. J. Cho of Jackson State
University (in front of the traffic jam) giving a presentation in situ on aquatic macrophytes:
About an hour and 40 minutes
into this trip is when a cold front came through, and we started to hear
thunder and see the clouds suddenly flash.
RETREAT!! (It took about 20
minutes to get back to the cars).
Those “specks” on the photo are not bits of dirt – they’re raindrops:
Now that we’ve loaded the
canoes back on the trailer, notice how wet
everybody is. (It builds character,
you know. BTW, that’s Joe Alfonso
asking the existential question, “WTF was I thinking when I signed up for
this class?”):
Postscript, back at the
lab:
