 2.   St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut, invites college students considering the health professions to join their research team for a Summer 2007 experience in the emergency department (ED) as Research Associates (RA).

 Colleagues:

Here is a unique opportunity for your students to have an evaluated, clinical research experience this summer.  St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut, is inviting college students considering the health professions to join their research team in the emergency department (ED) as Research Associates (RA).

From 2 June to 12 August, RAs will be volunteering a minimum of one 4-hour shift per week in the ED:

·           identifying and enrolling patients who are eligible for various research studies

·           obtaining demographic and historical data

·           being involved in the informed consent process

·           facilitating the production of the research

In the summer semester, RAs are allowed to serve additional shifts as long as they are not taking more than one other summer school course.

Since studies looking at primary health care screening in the ED form the core of the research effort, RAs will be interacting with large numbers of patients presenting with the range of problems seen in an inner city ED.  Their performance will be evaluated on each shift by emergency physicians and nurses.  These shift evaluations will be collated into an end-of-semester letter of assessment that will be sent on to you as their pre-health adviser.

From this basic activity, the potential for additional research and didactic opportunities at this major teaching affiliate of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine is limited only by the student's initiative.

With the addition of the academic components of a formal internship, the summer program will be offered as a pass/fail, one credit course through the St. Vincent’s College.  The cost for the course is $330, with an $80 administrative fee, which includes drug testing, and a $25 application fee.

On-campus housing will be available at the University of Bridgeport.

Complete information can be found on our web site, www.RAprogram.com.  This includes application materials and required health forms.  Potential RAs will need a simple letter of endorsement from their pre-health adviser on official stationary.  For your convenience, a sample letter with the elements that we require is also on the web site.

If you have any questions or need additional information, or if you would like to explore the possibility of developing a similar program in collaboration with academic or community hospitals in your area, I look forward to your contact.

3. One student’s observations on the January MCAT CBT administrations.  (Thanks to Barbara Huntington, PHP Director at SDSU, for sending me this.)

-  Highlighting and strikeouts work as expected.  The search function
wasn't anywhere to be found.  When you go back to review your answers,
your highlighting disappears, but your strikeouts persist.
-  Staggered start times for test-takers.  Since we all didn't start
at once, some people started their Writing section before or after
others.  This was sort of distracting to me because I did not
anticipate hearing heavy typing while I was at the end of my verbal
section, and at the beginning of my bio section.  I heard some places
offer earplugs, but my test center had headphones.
-  No scroller button on the mouse
-  Periodic table hovers over you screen and you can move it around.
-  I heard some test centers give whiteboards instead of scratch
paper.  Might be worthwhile to check what your test center does.

That's all I could think of.  I had questions about some of these
details before I took the test, so now that I know the answers -
thought I could pass it along.

4.  San Diego State University offers a summer MHIRT program at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana to do ethnobotanical research.  (Thanks to Barbara Huntington, PHP Director at SDSU, for sending me this.)

The San Diego State University (SDSU) branch of the Minority Health Disparity International Research Training (MHIRT) program is pleased to announce that it will offer a fantastic research opportunity for students majoring or minoring in the sciences interested in doing ethnobotanical research in Ghana during the upcoming summer!

MHIRT is an international research experience that prepares students for a career in biomedical research. The long-term objective is to increase the number of underrepresented minority faculty in biomedical science.

ELIGIBILITY We are looking for students that can fulfill the following requirements by the time the summer program begins:

  • Be an American citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Be at least a rising junior (that means they must have completed their sophomore year by end of June 2006) or more (even graduate students are welcome to apply).
  • Be a science major or minor
  • Have completed 1 year of general chemistry
  • Have completed at least 1 organic chemistry class
  • Have completed at least 2 Afrikana, African or African American Studies classes

Students will be using organic chemistry techniques to study some of the plants used to treat diabetes in Ghana. This is why we ask that all the students have taken an organic chemistry class, since everyone comes with different life experiences. We also want to maximize the amount of time students are actually doing research and not learning how to do techniques.

One of the major goals of this MHIRT program, also, is for all the students to have the same/similar experience(s). One way to make sure this happens is to have everyone arrive and leave Ghana at the same time, live in the same house, work cooperatively in the laboratory, go on field trips together and interact with the Ghanaian people.

WHAT IS COVERED BY MHIRT plane fair, room and board in Ghana (this money doesn't go directly to you), $800/month stipend for undergraduates, lab supplies (this goes to the lab and not to you directly). For other coverage check the website for frequently asked questions by accepted students.
APPLICATIONS and other questions you may have are available online at <<http://www.sci.sdsu.edu/osrsp/mirt/>> and is open to all students in the USA. Applications are due at 4:00 p.m. PST on Friday, March 9, 2007. There are four modifications that students applying for the SDSU MHIRT program should take care to note.

1. If you already have a legitimate passport please note it on your application.

2. Two letters of recommendation instead of one is required. At least one of these letters should be from a faculty member who has supervised you in a laboratory setting.

3. Neither a letter from a potential international mentor nor a proposed research project is required. The type of research SDSU MHIRT summer scholars will be ethnobotanical as stated above.

4. Students should note when their spring semester/quarter ends and when their fall semester/quarter begins.

INTERVIEWS of potential finalists will begin on March 16, 2007.

FINAL DECISIONS will be made and students notified by March 30, 2007.

TENTATIVE DEPARTURE DATES from San Diego will be between June 4 and June 8, 2007.

TENTATIVE RETURN DATES is between August 13 and August 17 to San Diego.

These dates were chosen because many schools are on the semester system (as is SDSU) and traditionally their classes begin in mid to late August. We're hoping this will give students enough time to regroup before classes begin at their parent institutions or give them enough notice so they can make arrangements with their parent institutions about arriving after the semester begins.

After reading the website noted above, if you have more questions feel free to email Dr. Estralita Martin at <<<mailto:esmartin@sciences.sdsu.edu>esmartin@sciences.sdsu.edu>> with a letter of interest or telephone either Mr. Guy Nelson or Dr. Robert Pozos at (619) 594-2581.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Estralita Martin
