Established in 2014, the hotspotting project features a collaborative of 20 teams and more than 100 students from a wide range of health professions and community organizations to identify the social factors that lead to repeat hospitalizations and to develop strategies that improve patient care.

CDC Initiative Identifies Population Health Milestones in Medical Training

A project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in partnership with the AAMC and Duke University School of Medicine, has identified population health milestones in medical training that can be used across disciplines, compiled materials and assessment tools to support the teaching of population health in the primary care specialties, and created a collection of more than 200 online population health resources. The cross-organizational team has developed generic milestones in this area to create a common set of goals for assessing a physician's population health skills.

Dear Colleague,

Every day, students who are passionate about improving the health of people and communities are discovering the fields of public health and health care management. Graduates of the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) and Master of Health Administration (M.H.A.) programs at Saint Louis University's highly-ranked College for Public Health and Social Justice are some of the nation's most sought-after in the job market. In fact, 92% are placed in jobs and fellowships within 3 months of graduation. Here's why:

  • Our small class sizes, accessible professors and practice experience options add up to a highly personalized experience for students.
  • Our courses emphasize collaboration and applied learning in and outside the classroom, preparing our graduates for leadership in today's dynamic public health and health care workforce.
  • Our Jesuit identity is a moral foundation for our social justice purpose: working with and in communities to improve health and well-being, with a focus on inequities in health.
  • SLU's top-ten M.H.A. is one of the nation's largest and best-established programs, connecting students to a coast-to-coast network of internship sites and alumni working in senior leadership positions.
  • SLU's competency-based curriculum is a nationally-known model that incorporates the skills and techniques that employers need and make our graduates job-ready.

12.  AACOM Information Alert, October 30, 2015 edition:  Congress Passes Two-Year Budget Deal; Heads to President for Signature.

http://cqrcengage.com/aacom/file/0e6cgoeaJBT/header_bluegrey2.jpg

Congress Passes Two-Year Budget Deal; Heads to President for Signature

(October 30, 2015)  Today, the Senate voted 64-35 to pass the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 (HR 1314), a two-year budget agreement passed by the House of Representatives on October 28 by a vote of 266-167, which would prevent a federal government shutdown and put spending targets in place through 2017.  The bill now heads to the President for his signature, which is timely as newly-elected House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) begins his term.  However, lawmakers will still need to finalize an omnibus appropriations bill to fund the federal government for the rest of fiscal year 2016.

Overall, the agreement sets budget levels for the current and next fiscal years, suspends the debt limit until March 2017, addresses shortfalls in Social Security, and reduces an expected increase in Medicare Part B premiums.  Of note:  the bill includes an offset by extending the Medicare sequester that was approved in the Budget Control Act of 2011 for an additional year.

The bill also sets up additional cuts to hospitals.  Specifically, Medicare will pay lower rates to any new outpatient clinics acquired or established by a hospital, and existing hospital-owned outpatient departments – whether they are former physician offices or separate clinics – will be exempt from the new payment scheme.

Highlights of the budget agreement include the following:

  • Provides sequestration relief of $80 billion over the next two fiscal years, divided equally between defense and domestic discretionary spending.
  • Fully offsets the $80 billion increase above current law with mandatory spending cuts and additional savings.
  • Increases caps on discretionary spending for 2016 and 2017.
  • Replaces sequestration with a "balanced approach," including $11 billion in revenue.
  • Suspends the current $18.1 trillion debt limit through March 2017.
  • Curtails an increase in Medicare premiums due to go into effect in January for some beneficiaries.   Without the fix, a premium spike of up to 52 percent would take effect on January 1 for new Medicare enrollees, high-income beneficiaries and pensioners, as well as states, to cover the cost of beneficiaries also eligible for Medicaid.  The cost increases were triggered by a complicated interplay of Medicare and Social Security rules affecting a portion of enrollees.
  • Repeals the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that large employers (more than 200 employees) automatically enroll employees in their health plans.
  • Prevents a 20 percent across-the-board benefit cut to the Social Security Disability Insurance Program, resulting in $168 billion in long-term savings.

Please contact Pamela Murphy, AACOM Vice President of Government Relations, at pmurphy@aacom.org if you have any questions.

Dear Advisors,

Greetings from our new offices in Washington, D.C.

As your pre-med students prepare for fall midterms, the MCAT, and the grind of medical school applications, many of them are simply not asking the most important question for a future physician or healthcare professional: "Is Medicine Right for Me?"

As many of you know, we offer ethical pre-med shadowing programs in European hospitals. Our alumni consistently walk away from four or five weeks in a developed-world hospital with a completely different perspective on what it is like to be a healthcare professional. Many of them have never seen day-to-day practice of medicine: administrative tasks, management of staff, or what it's like to be in the break room in between surgeries. They have also never seen the practical difference between careers in various medical specialties. What is it really like to go into anesthesiology? Cardiology? Orthopedics?

These are the questions that really matter for a pre-med student.

So we encourage you to think long-term and push your students to consider ethical shadowing programs like ours, because until they spend quality time with doctors in a developed-world hospital, they will never truly know if medicine is right for them. We've seen our programs transform pre-med students and push them to think deeply about their place in the medical community. And THAT is invaluable.
