Dear Pre-Health Advisor,

My name is Kelly Coleman and I am the Recruitment Coordinator for the Medical School for International Health (MSIH).  The Medical School for International Health is an innovative, four-year, North American-style medical school that incorporates global health coursework into all four years of the medical school curriculum.  The MSIH prepares physicians to address the impact of cultural, economic, political and environmental factors on the health of individuals and populations worldwide.

I am pleased to provide you with an overview of the admissions statistics for our 2014 entering class. Our entering class of 2014 consists of students from many countries, including the United States, Canada, Israel, the Netherlands, India and Australia.  The entering class had an average GPA of 3.57 and an average MCAT score of 31.

Over 31% of the students in the entering class hold advanced degrees and over 80% of the class have volunteered, studied or worked internationally.  This year, four first-year medical students at the MSIH have been awarded four-year tuition scholarships as recognition of their academic and personal accomplishments.

One of those scholarships recipients, Luisa Bonilla Hernandez (left), is from Colombia.  She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Western Ontario, as well as a Master’s degree in Global Health from McMaster University.  Luisa has been involved with Students Rebuilding Health in Rwanda.

Another scholarship recipient is Eva-Chava Bernfeld, who is from the Netherlands and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania.  Eva has volunteered in Israel, as well as conducted research with the CBG-MEB in the Netherlands.

Maia Reiley, another 2014 scholarship recipient, holds a Bachelor’s Degree from New York University, as well as Master’s degree in Nutrition from Columbia University.  Maia has studied in France and volunteered with African Services and the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center.

I also want to provide you with some information on our recent graduates.  Again this year, our graduates were offered residency placements in competitive residency programs, including Harvard, Case Western, Tufts, Albert Einstein and Tulane.  In fact, 97% of those who entered the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) were matched into residency programs in the United States.

The recruitment of outstanding applicants who seek medical careers involving diverse and under-served communities around the world is a cornerstone of the MSIH mission.  We are currently accepting applications for the entering class of 2015.  Should you, or a student from your institution, be interested in the Medical School for International Health, please contact the MSIH Admissions Office at (212) 305-9587, visit our website at msih.net, or view the first-year medical student blog http://firstyearmsih.blogspot.com.  We will also be conducting an informational webinar on October 7th,  and the link to register is

6.  The Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) approved VCOM-Auburn (Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine) to be able to accept and admit applicants for fall 2015.

cid:image003.jpg@01CFCFF7.6B6FE240

Greetings Friends!

I am thrilled to share that the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) approved VCOM-Auburn to be able to accept and admit applicants for fall 2015.  So while students have been able to designate the VCOM-Auburn campus over the past two months on the AACOMAS application, we are excited to share that we have the approval to accept and admit students for fall 2015!!

VCOM currently has collaborative research programs with Auburn University.  We also have clinical programs for current VCOM students from the Virginia and Carolinas campuses in Alabama and Georgia – some of the same locations VCOM-Auburn students will train when they get to their third year -- so we are already off to a great start to welcome the inaugural class.  Our campus facilities will be incredible and ready in April 2015 (check out the webcam below) and applicants appreciate knowing that a branch campus of a fully accredited program means the new campus is also fully accredited.

If your students apply to multiple VCOM campuses, they will have the opportunity to rank their campus preference for potential interview and attendance if they are extended an invitation for a secondary application (we still only interview at one campus and we still screen for secondaries).  If they already submitted their secondary with a campus ranking and want to change this based on this news, please ask them to contact Meghan Farley at mfarley@vcom.vt.edu

We are excited to offer opportunities for your students to receive a superior medical education at the newest medical school campus.

Please circulate this email to your advisees and please “check out” this article:

and please check our webcam showing the progress of our new campus!

Thank you for all you do for your students and medical education.  We are excited about continuing to partner with you to educate our future physicians.

Medical Schools to Test Guidelines for Preparing Medical Students for Residency Training

The AAMC announced the 10 medical schools that will make up a pilot cohort to test the implementation of the Core Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for Entering Residency. The guidelines, released in June, aim to help bridge the gap between patient care activities that new physicians should be able to perform on day one of residency training and those they feel ready to perform without direct supervision. "The AAMC was extremely gratified that more than half of our member medical schools applied to participate in this pilot program. The enthusiastic response from more than 70 institutions demonstrates the significant energy and commitment within academic medicine toward closing the gap between expectations and performance for residents on day one," said Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., AAMC president and CEO.

National Initiative to Improve Health Care Coordination Between Primary Care and Specialty Physicians Set to Begin

The AAMC has received an official Notice of Award from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation to begin a three-year project. The initiative will disseminate a model of care aimed at improving the quality of care and the patient experience, while reducing the overall cost of care by enhancing communication and coordination between primary care and specialty physicians in the ambulatory setting. The model initially was developed and piloted by the University of California, San Francisco. Funded by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovations through its Health Care Innovation Awards program, the project will begin this month at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, the University of California, San Diego Medical Center, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the University of Virginia Medical Center, and the University of Wisconsin Health.

AAMC Participates in Health Affairs Briefing on IOM Report

The discussion and debate about the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) July report on GME governance and financing continued at a briefing held by Health Affairs at the National Press Club last week. Presenters included Stephen Lipstein, president and CEO of BJC Healthcare; AAMC chief public policy officer, Atul Grover, M.D., Ph.D.; Debra Weinstein, M.D., an IOM committee member, and David Sklar, editor-in-chief of Academic Medicine. While there was general consensus about enhancing teaching hospitals' accountability and transparency for GME funding, many speakers expressed concerns about the real and unintended potential consequences of many of the committee's recommendations. From the AAMC perspective, Grover emphasized the need to consider how changes could affect patients and the critical community services that indirect medical expense payments are intended to fund, and reiterated the association's support for legislation to enhance accountability and transparency while providing a modest increase in residency training positions. To watch a video of the briefing, visit www.healthaffairs.org/events/2014_09_10_graduate_medical_education.

HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program Now Accepting Applications

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Competition System is open for applications to the HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program. The program enables U.S. medical school students to participate in a year-long mentored research training program in basic, translational, or applied biomedical research at an academic or nonprofit institution other than a federal agency, at HHMI's Janelia Research Campus near Washington, D.C., or at K-RITH in Durban, South Africa. The application deadline is Jan. 12, 2015. For more information, visit www.hhmi.org/medfellowships.

Deadline Approaching: Competition Challenges Medical Students and Residents to Increase Diversity Among Future Physicians

The deadline for the AAMC ProjectMED (Motivate, Engage, and Develop) for the Future of Healthcare video competition has been extended to Sept. 29. The competition challenges medical schools and teaching hospitals to engage community partners in increasing the diversity of future physicians and scientists. It calls for teams of medical students and residents, in partnership with a community organization, to create a brief video depicting an innovative approach to developing programs and initiatives targeting the K-12 public education system and students. Six finalists will be selected, and an online voting audience will narrow down the selection to three winners. The winning teams will receive a monetary award to fund a pilot program in their community based on the innovative approach illustrated in their video. For details and submission information, visit www.aamc.org/students/projectmed.

On the Move

Pamela Sass, M.D., will serve as interim dean for The College of Medicine SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Sass, who currently serves as senior associate dean for academic affairs, will succeed Ian L. Taylor, M.D., Ph.D., who announced earlier this year that he would be stepping down. Taylor has served as dean and senior vice president for biomedical education and research since Sept. 2006.

Spooky Nights is Just Around The Corner

The most spook-tacular event of the year is almost here! This year, Spooky Nights will feature more scares and more ways to have fun, including zombie paintball hayrides.

If you're not looking for a scare, there are plenty of activities fit for little ghosts and goblins, including pumpkin painting, nocturnal nature hikes and a food truck rodeo.

All proceeds from Spooky Nights help keep Shelby Farms Park and Shelby Farms Greenline clean, green and safe. For a full list of actives and prices, click the link below.
