Description:

BIOL 112, Principles of Biology II, is the second half of a year-long survey course in introductory biology. In this course, we will examine the systematics and taxonomy of animals, anatomy and physiology of eukaryotic organisms, and embryology. The course includes three lectures and one discussion section each week.

Grading:

Grading for this course will be based on the following:

  • 4 semester exams, each worth 1/7 of your final grade. Each exam will include short answer, multiple-choice and essay questions;
  • Weekly quizzes covering the previous week's material, administered at the beginning of each discussion section. Quizzes will include short answer, multiple-choice and short essay questions. Collectively, these quizzes will be worth 1/7 of your final grade;
  • An oral presentation on a selected chapter of Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species, which will be worth 1/7 of your final grade.  The basic assumption of this presentation is that YOU will be teaching each other the points made by Charles Darwin to develop and support his theory.  I have resources to help you, but it’s going to be YOUR responsibility to teach your peers.  You will be expected to submit an outline of your presentation and 5 multiple-choice questions at least 2 days in advance so that I can distribute your outline to the rest of the class.  (Please see the grading rubric, http://www.cbu.edu/~seisen/OriginOfSpeciesPresentationRubric.htm    );
  • A final exam scheduled during final exam week. This final exam will include short-answer and multiple-choice questions, and will be worth 1/7 of your final grade.

Grading scale

Grading for all quizzes, reports, and exams will be based on a 4.0 grading scale, in which:

3.5 to 4.0 = A
2.75 to 3.49 = B
2.00 to 2.74 = C
1.00 to 1.99 = D
< 1.00 = F
