Review |
| Blanchard, K. H.
(1983). The One Minute Manager. New York: Berkley
Books. |
 |
"Who needs to read the One
Minute Manager? It really can do no harm to anyone and has
good advice for everyone. Anyone can benefit from the three
steps or secrets as the authors describe." |
-- Keith Pitman, MGMT 352, Fall 2002 |
|
Cox, D., & Hoover, J. (2002).
Leadership
When the Heat's On. New York: McGraw-Hill. |
 | "Grade, C-" |

 | "could have done a better job at finding more interesting and
reasonable stories [examples] than he did" |
 | "tended to jump around" |
-- Laurie
Benedict, XMBA 2002 |
| Johnson, S., &

understand." |
 | " |
 | "This
book is a good motivational tool for an individual, while at the

there, probably military or political. |

 |
History

place to go for the dirt and scandals, but useful nevertheless. |
 |
Business
Week did a nice series on "Great

 |
Civil
War biographies |
 |
CNN
often has biographical profiles. For these, you have to search a
bit. For example, there's one on Lech
Walesa |
 |
Fortune
Small Business: Classic American Companies. An excellent
source for brief bios on business founders (such as Kemmons Wilson).
For these folks, it's often harder to find information (because they're not
"exciting"). Also, if you're interested in a company's
founder, the company website often will have a brief history (obviously
sanitized and full of praise) |
 |
New York Times
archived obituaries. This is a bit cumbersome, because these aren't really
indexed. Got to Google and search
for: "Historic Person site:nytimes.com" In your Google
results, look for a link to "www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/010101".
The date is usually the person's date of birth. This sounds like a lot
of trouble., but these obits are long and detailed and really worth the
trouble. |
 |
If a person is
involved in politics, check and see if they've won a
Nobel
Peace Prize. Nobel.org has a biography on each winner of the prize,
including folks such as Nelson Mandela, Lech Walesa, and Woodrow Wilson |
 |
PBS
American Experience. This is the series a lot of our films
came from. There's usually a companion page with some additional
information about the person. Not a complete source but certainly a
start. |
 |
Time
100. These are brief profiles of the people Time felt
were the important people of the 20th century. |
 |
White
House. Each past US president and first lady has a brief bio
included here. Like the UK monarchy site, this is the
"official" bio, and the scandals are omitted. For most
former presidents, there's a library or museum -- for example, see Thomas
Jefferson's home, Monticello.
Again, though, the info on these sites will usually be sanitized. |
 | Wikipedia:
the
on-line, collaboratively edited encyclopedia.
I generally trust Wikipedia for people who are relatively uncontroversial
and / or long dead; for more recent figures, the information can be really
slanted. However, for those more controversial leaders (and really
anyone else), don't stop there. For anything beyond
basic facts, find a confirming source. I have found (and
corrected) inaccuracies here. [primarily in the area of
Victorian novels, under the name DrKristin]
