Biological Career Choices
This course is designed to introduce the wide range of opportunities available with a biology degree
This class meets once a week
Students take and discuss results from the Myers-Briggs Exam (which allows students to assess their learning styles).  Dee Beard from the career center comes and talks to the class.
Outside speakers, alumni, graduate recruiters.
Students take field trips (see following slides).
Most importantly students volunteer in two different areas of biology.  This allows students to see what it is really like in the real world.

Junior Biology Seminar
The Biology Seminar Series consists of presentations from researchers from the Memphis Area
Students meet and discuss research with these investigators
Students write a research proposal on an area of interest with a mentor of their choice

Senior Research
In the summer between the Junior and Senior year, students conduct research.
Research can be on clinical or basic science topics and the research can be conducted in Memphis or at other Institutions outside of Memphis.
This program allows students Real World Experiences in Research

Senior Research
Institutions where CBU Biology students have conducted their undergraduate research:
University of TN, Memphis
St Jude Children’s Research Hospital
Smith-Nephew
University of Memphis
MHIRT:  Brazil or Uganda

Biology Student Research
Both Drs Kimble and Vazquez-Chona  started their Ph.D. path through their CBU  senior research projects conducted at UT

Completion of Research and What is next?
Students spend 250-300 hours during the summer working on their research project.
The class meets every other week in person or over the internet through the use of WebCT.
In the Fall Semester of the Senior Year, students begin to write up a journal style research article.  By the end of Fall semester they have a completed rough draft.

The Results
CBU Biology Graduates experience what a Career in Biology is all about.
By the time they graduate, students have experienced all aspects of presenting research results.
CBU students are better prepared for graduate training.
CBU Students get either laboratory or clinical experience.
These experiences help in the decisions on what to do with their degree from CBU.
CBU Biology graduates go on to great success…
