Report from Dr. Leando Silveira, June 2004:  "Sally and Jen at work. [Up to now, they have been] involved in 13 maned-wolf captures (3 new individuals), 3 pampas-cat and 1 ocelot. They are working on their maned-wolf ecology and conservation project."   • MIRT: Research Training Opportunity
  • The Minority International Research Training grant to CBU supports undergraduate biology students who are selected to join summer research projects in Brazil and Uganda.  The application deadline is 15 Jan.

    		Regarding Health Careers --  a message from Dr. Eisen
    • As a reminder to students, Dr. Eisen will off-campus on a sabbatical leave that officially starts on the date of the President's Workshop, 19 August 2004.  If you are applying to a health-related professional school during the upcoming academic year, please direct all inquiries regarding your evaluation file to Brother Edward Salgado.
    Summer Courses at Gulf Coast Research Lab
  • Applications and the program for courses to be taught at the GCRL this summer are now available at the GCRL web site.  The course listing includes links to course descriptions including specifics about the pre-requisites (for example 8 or more college cr. hrs. of biology). 
  • Course Calendar for 2004  There is short "May Mester" (3 course offerings) and two standard summer terms with 4 and 5 course offerings respectively.  You can take only one course per term.  These are all courses related to marine biology.  You can see the "Summer Field Program" list of courses, a course calendar, and information about fees and housing at the GCRL Summer Field Program web site.
  • With Bro. Edward's permission, GCRL courses can be used toward your CBU Biology degree!  That is, any of these GCRL courses can be used as a CBU Biology elective.  (See the end of the biology course description in the CBU catalog.)

    Biology & Biotechnology Paid Summer Research Opportunities for 2004

    • A website maintained by Rochester Institute of Technology provides links to current Biology and Biotechnology co-op and internship opportunities.  (We call it summer research, they call it co-op.)  "All the listings are Paid, Full-time, Short-term (10-20 weeks) opportunities in positions directly related to Biology & Biotechnology."
    • "In addition to the valuable experience and good pay that a Co-op or Internship will give you, very many of the Opportunities listed on this website also provide Travel Reimbursement, Housing and Meals." 
    • The links are organized and cross-listed according to categories for various fields of biology, opportunities for minority and underrepresented students,   international opportunities, alphabetical, and by state. 
    • The links listed at the RIT site include CBU's MIRT program for summer research in Brazil or Uganda with opportunities primarily for students between their junior and senior year.

  • Monday, 15 March 2004   "The Sense of Taste"  2:00 p.m. in S153.
  • Dr. David Smith, Director of the Neuroscience Institute at the University of TN, will speak on March 15 at 2:00 pm in room S153. 
  • The title of his talk is "The Sense of Taste."  He will also discuss careers in neuroscience. 
  • This discussion is part of the Bio Careers class and in honor of Brain Awareness Week 2004.

  • Thursday, 19 February 2004.  ACS Dinner Meeting.  6:30 p.m. East Lounge
      • The Memphis Section of the American Chemical Society is hosting it's February meeting on the CBU campus. 
      • Our speaker is Dr. Warren Bush, who will be discussing "How Do I Find a Job?  Managing the Job Market."  Presentation begins at 7:30 p.m.
      • Dinner is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the East Lounge of the  Thomas Center.  (And just because a chemical organization sponsors this talk doesn't mean that other science and engineering majors won't pick up some important skills and information!) 
      • Our speaker is provided by the American Chemical Society Speaker Service, and has many wonderful ideas about winning a job in the scientific community.  We hope to also have information from the Career Services Office of ACS and other scientific staffing services.

    • An article in the 19 Dec. 2003 issue of the Memphis Business Journal features Dr. Eisen discussing the BIOL 103 course Biology of Addiction and his new book scheduled for publication in 2005 by Elsivier.
      • "CBU professor finds willing subjects for alcohol research" David Royer. "Alcohol and college students have traditionally gone together like gin and tonic, but rarely do the two converge inside the classroom.... "
      • "Eisen, who specializes in researching chemical dependencies, has been teaching his Biology of Addiction lecture course for four years. But for next semester, he's put together an accompanying lab so students can experience some of what they learn in lecture firsthand."

    • Saturday, 15 Nov. 2003   Bed Nets for Uganda: Fundraiser 

      • 2:00 - 4:30 p.m.  Panchos downtown restaurant, 87 S. Second Street.
      • Don't miss the Photos (from Dr. Fitzgerald)
      • The fundraiser was a lock-up and party at Panchos Mexican Restaurant on the afternoon of Saturday, 15 November 2003.  More than $1,000 was raised.
      • This organization "Easy Access to Bed Nets" was founded by three MIRT students [Teshie Dotson (CBU), Crystal Ton (Univ. Memphis) and Brett Wainger (CBU, ’03)] during their summer 2003 research trip to Uganda.  They are seeking additional funding to establish the organization as a nonprofit.
      • More information about the Project: Easy Access to Bed Nets for Malaria Prevention in Uganda 
    		 For the fundraiser, Dr. Ogilvie plays the part of a prisoner who needs to raise bail.

      • Dr. Risoletta Marques from Florianopolis, Brazil will presented a seminar on her research.
        • Dr. Marques is an environmental scientist interested in heat shock protein as an indicator of pollution in invertebrates and vertebrates.  She was here last year and Nathan Daulton (Chem E) worked in her lab last summer.
      • Prospective MIRT applicants should plan on attending this informational seminar.

    • Saturday, 8 Nov. 2003   Lunar Eclipse Viewing at Pink Palace Museum
      • There will be a total lunar eclipse this coming Saturday evening, November 8th.  The eclipse will begin just as the Moon is rising (at sunset, of course).  Members of the Memphis Astronomical Society (and others) will set up their telescopes on the front lawn of the Memphis Pink Palace Museum (weather permitting!) for public observing as soon as the Moon clears the trees in the southeast.  More than likely, other objects will be shown as well (e.g. Mars, colorful double stars, the Pleiades, etc.) since the eclipse progresses quite slowly.  (A typical lunar eclipse lasts about 3 hours from start to finish.)  For more information, contact Dr. Busler.

    • Thursday, 6 Nov. 2003  Smith & Nephew Tour Meet at 2:00 p.m., 2nd floor Science Building
      • To make it easier to carpool to Smith & Nephew (1450 Brooks Road, Memphis), we will meet on the Biology floor of the School of Sciences at 2:00 p.m. and begin heading out at 2:20 p.m. on the dot!
      • The Smith & Nephew location here in Memphis manufactures orthopaedic products.  Mr. Si Janna will be providing us with the tour. 
      • We need to get a count of how many people will be going.  So, if you are interested in participating in this tour, please email Steven L. Moore at smoore@cbu.edu.  The deadline to reserve your spot on the Tour is Thursday October 16, 2003.

  • Wednesday, 5 Nov. 2003   Beta Beta Beta  Interview Workshop  6:00 p.m. -- 8:00 p.m.
    • CBU's chapter of Beta Beta Beta hosted Mock Interviews with Professionals for Pre-Health and Graduate School.
    • Dr. Ogilvie reports that they had 9 interviewees and four professionals doing the interviewing, including two CBU grads, Beth Trouey (PT) and Fauzia Khan, D.D.S. and also  Karen  Curtis, M.D. and Dr. Janet Kendrick (pharmacy). 
    • An evening of mock interviews for any Pre-Health major from CBU.  Health care professionals (physicians, dentists, optometrists, etc.) were invited to come to CBU on Nov. 5 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  They conducted one-on-one interviews with our students.

    • Friday, 31 October 2003   Annual Halloween Benefit Concert  for LeBonheur Children's Medical Center 12:15 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. Alfonso Dining Hall
  • An integral part of this Friday's 2nd annual Halloween Day Lunchtime Benefit Concert for Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center will be a Staff and Faculty Costume Contest.  An award will be given to the staff or faculty member with the most original costume. The award will be decided by those students having lunch in the Alfonso Dining Hall.  Music, provided by Death Warmed Over, begins at 12:15 p.m., and the contest will be held at 12:45 p.m., allowing PLENTY of time for those of you who have 1 o'clock classes.  For more information, contact Dr. Eisen at 321-3447.

  • Dave Brown, meteorologist for WMC-TV, will give a presentation on responsible drinking as part of the CBU observance of National Alcohol Awareness Week. 
  • "Dave Brown recently celebrated 26 years with WMC-TV Channel 5, where he is director of weather services and chief weathercaster.... Delivers speeches to civic clubs, schools, churches, and at community events against drunk driving after his daughter, Stefanie Brown Kuehl, his 6-month-old granddaughter Zadie, and unborn grandson Thomas were killed by a drunk driver. Has participated in legislative efforts resulting in four anti-DUI bills becoming law in Tennessee. Has been voted 'Best Local Weatherman' by readers of The Memphis Flyer and Memphis magazine.” Source:  Memphis Magazine.

      • Dr. Ogilvie has arranged for a special "behind the scenes" tour of the Panda exhibit!  (Otherwise you must make reservations and pay to see the pandas, even on "free admission" Tuesdays.)  Of course, the rest of the zoo will also available for touring after going to see the pandas.
      • If you plan to join us, please email Dr. Mary Ogilvie at mogilvie@cbu.edu.  Please do so as soon as possible so that Dr. Ogilvie can give the zoo an estimate of how many will attend.

      • CBU's chapter of Beta Beta Beta (the Biology honor society) held a fundraising Dog Wash on Saturday, 13 Sept. from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the CBU Central parking lot (near the Maintenance Building).  Several people came by to meet everyone's canine pets!  For more information on future Dog Wash fundraisers, or to volunteer, contact Michelle Driscoll.

    • The Walk will be Saturday, 27 Sept. 2003.  Students from CBU's chapter of Beta Beta Beta and Student Affiliates of ACS will be volunteering to help with this fundraiser.
    • Many BBB and ACS members have already signed up for the Walk by filling out a volunteer sign-up sheet. If you have not already signed up and you wish to take part, there are blank forms available in S213.  You may turn in your forms in S213 or at the Beta Beta Beta meeting. We need all volunteer forms turned in by this Thursday, 18 September.  If you have any question you can email Michelle Driscoll pdriscol@cbu.edu .

    • Chemistry Placement Exam LAST CHANCE Wed., 27 Aug. 2003, 2:00 p.m. room S155.  Students cannot take Chem 113 until they pass this exam!  (The exam is optional for those who choose Chem 101.)  Contact Dr. Busler if you have a question about the exam.  Scores from the 25 Aug. exam are posted on the bulletin board, upstairs in the Science Building.
    • New Monday Biol 111 Lab section.  Check your schedule!  To reduce overcrowding in Biol 111L, we had to move some students into a Monday 2:00 lab section.  Biol 111 labs will meet starting Tues., 2 Sept.  Because of the Labor Day holiday on Mon., 1 Sept., students in the Monday Biol 111 lab section will be asked to attend another section for this week only.
